U.S. Customs Halts Tariff Collections Under Trump-Era Emergency Powers
U.S. Customs and Border Protection will cease collecting tariffs imposed under former President Trump's emergency powers starting Tuesday. The agency notified importers via its Cargo Systems Messaging Service (CSMS) that affected tariff codes WOULD be deactivated. This move follows a Supreme Court ruling that struck down several Trump-era tariffs, though Customs did not clarify why collections continued post-ruling or whether refunds would be issued.
The suspension applies exclusively to tariffs linked to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Duties under Section 232 (national security) and Section 301 (unfair trade practices) remain unchanged. The policy shift coincides with Trump's announcement of new global tariffs—initially set at 10%, then raised to 15%—under a separate legal framework.
